After all the royalties they brought him from their most popular versions of I can't Quit You Baby and You Shook Me and twenty years after the release of Whole Lotta Love he sued them for Whole Lotta Love...

From around 8:05 this version has always sounded like Led Zeppelin to me. Dave sounds like he wants so bad to go into Zep's version of Babe i'm Gonna Leave You and then at the end a little hat tip to ian Gillian. Whatever, it's a great somg and Cobverdale is a great singer.

@ECHO1NINER yes. Coda means tail, in musical analysis terminology it is an extra bit of music added on even though formally the piece has ended; to stretch it out just a bit more.

Alison is such a great singer. I love this song. Everytime I hear it it reminds me of a road trip through the Southern Appalachians with a raven haired beauty in a new TransAm back in Sept.'83. when Big Log was on every rock station. Alison would have looked good riding with me on that trip too.

@probrojeffro No Black Dog is not a repeated motif. The guitar part is an answer to the call made by the singer. It is too developed melodically. Kashmir by Zep, that's a riff- only three notes. Take Five, the jazz hit by dave Brubeck uses a riff. String of Pearls that the Glen Miller band played...

This is possibly my favorite post Gillian 1970s Deep Purple song. This version is very Led Zeppelinesque in the last two minutes.

Haha- why did Coverdale sound like Page? Well he's a heavy metal singer. British metal singers sound like Plant, Ian Gillian or Paul Rodgers. Coverdale sort of sounds like Paul Rodgers mixed with Robert Plant. That's why Coverdale replaced Gillian in Deep Purple and why got to work with Jimmy page

@Paulsworks I have the original issue Led Zeppelin album on vinyl and it credits Willie Dixon for I Can't Quit You and You Shook Me. They did not credit him for the words and similar riff on Whole Lotta Love which would seem to be a ripoff of Dixon's You Need Love.
