i think the point he was trying to make is that they both do. Derek sings a lot of backup and Dan sings on average half the lead vocals every album. So your question of "why waste talent" makes it seem like you may not have listened to the band much, or at least don't pay much attent...

I've always thought that Alkaline Trio sound best an acoustic format.Matt and Dan have powerful voice that i think sound great and It really speaks volumes of the bands songwriting ability when you can strip away all the production form the studio albums, and the songs sound 10x better.
