Clay 2 Nine is an influential,visionary,innovati ve,pioneering, multi-talented Liberian-born Dutch artist/radio,tv producer/filmmaker/activist/pu blicist and entrepreneur-a walking industry.
About Me:
When a man sings and looks like Clay 2 Nine,we tend to underestimate him.We ask him to produce a hit song.Date a beautiful woman.Have a cute baby. And we are happy. But he's not content. The fact that Clay 2 Nine is a solo artist with over 70 self-composed songs in his repertoire is just one part of what he has to offer as a multi-facet artist. He uses his creative power to get people to look into places that cameras and songs don't usually take them.He undertakes projects that make us to realize we are all living in a brotherhood of man.In Save Darfur,he invites you to reconsider the genocide in Darfur without even noticing that he's also producing an Arabic Rai protest song. That is what he did close to 2 decades ago with his reggae South African township jive song Toxic Waste. This artist with a vision, does the same in his clip Blue Christmas(Save Darfur). When you think you are looking at a video about mtv crib and a handsome, rock star-looking man,he throws a photo in your face of a woman with a skeletal-like child in a refugee camp somewhere in Africa. It's not all about Africa. He is a citizen of the world. His HIV AIDS awareness video is a lesson for the entire world, and not only a pitiful-looking man with a soultry voice lamenting over reggae rythms.
This prolific songwriter/producer has many songs in several genres and languages.
When in 1990 the Americans warned Liberian rebels that if fighting reached their capital city it would throw the country 100 years backwards, they didn't only mean the infrasture, economy and loss of lives. They were also talking about visionaries like,Clay 2,who were also undertaking unusual projects that would have placed their country on the world map in many ways and transformed the lives of many forever.Today, like many of his compatriots,he is putting back the pieces together to continue from where he was about 2 decades ago, when the Liberian civil war nearly shattered his dreams.
Before the civil crisis Clay 2 Nine was writing scripts for tv series, acting, modeling, produci ng music, making a movie, and involved with communication and language studies.
The artist recorded his debut album in 1989 after Ivory Coast's second biggest reggae artist,Ismael Isaac, directed him to a little studio in Treichville,Abidjan. The Jamaican and Ivorian musicians were impressed with his ability to compose and sing in several musical genres including roots reggae,soca,hi-life and Southern African township jive.
He recorded the songs Tribute to Bob Marley,Toxic Waste-a chant against the dumping of toxic and medical waste in third world countries' territories and waters. The melancholic song Woman Don't Cry was also on this album.Unfortunately for Clay 2,the master tape got missing during the civil war.The album was never heard. It was 4 round years later, when he penned and recorded the song George Weah the Recordman that people realized that Liberia had a reggae talent ready to confront the challenges of the reggae world.
The artist met Ivorian reggae giant,Alpha Blondy himself in 1994.Blondy's manager Kone Dodo was impressed with the work of the young Liberian and expressed his desire to sign him on to their record label.
Clay 2 holds a Bachelor degree in Linguistics and Education and a BTS in Communications,Marketing, and Publicity/Advertisement.
All of Clay 2 Nine's college education was paid for by European governments:France,Germany and Italy(under the auspices of the United Nations),and the Kingdom of Netherlands.
He works in the print, electronics media, and internet. The producer has in 2009 launched his own Multimedia production company (Clay 2 Nine Productions)which includes a record label. The world is anxiously waiting for his first commercial cd and more breath-taking videos and touching love songs, not forgetting his trademark daring protest songs.
Amnesty International recommended him to Hungry Eyes Documentaries in Holland, in 1999 where he worked on a documentary about the reconciliatory process for child soldiers in Liberia.
Clay 2 Nine considers himself a town crier for the global village. His songs and videos address every subject from genocide to multi-party democracy. He also sings about sports, love, and unity.
Many artists get involved with humanitarian services later on during their careers, but that of Clay 2 began with services rendered to United Nations and Doctors without borders,in war zones. It was 20 dollars he received for a week service to UNWFP/SELF in 1993 that he used to record the song George Weah the Recordman. This song put him back on the musical path after he lost his album dedicated to Bob Marley four years earlier. This Liberian genius intends to render more voluntary services to international humanitarian organisations.
It is still difficult to explain what Clay 2 Nine means to music. There are those who follow and those who lead.Clay 2 is a leader, setting the bar for what's expected of others.
