Everybody who really wants to understand what is going on with our country, where we have been, and where we are going needs to read the following:

1) The US Constitution, Declaration of Independence, and Federalist Papers.
2) Enlightenment thinking. The same ideas which the founding fathers read which led them to form our country and system of governance. Locke, Hume, Montesquieu, Rousseau, Voltaire, Hobbes, Tocqueville, Smith, and Bastiat.
3) Research the Federal Reserve. Really study them and know what it is that they do, why they do it, and how they fit into US history.
4) Austrian Economics. Especially if you've been brow beaten with Keynesian nonsense when you were in college. Hayek, von Mises, and Hazlitt are my favorites...though Peter Schiff and Ron Paul are also excellent and make really good books and youtube videos in their own right. By studying the Austrian school, you will learn that the free market had absolutely nothing to do with the financial crisis, and that it was government regulation and distortions of the market which caused this crash, the "recovery" is a farce, and we will soon experience hyperstagflation.

I also feel that you should read Ayn Rand. It is important to realize that involuntary altruism is theft and morally reprehensible. It is the banishment of personal property rights, without which no other rights can exist. Socialism is anti-liberty, anti-ideology, and so that is why only the ignorant and truly (I don't use this word lightly) EVIL people of the world subscribe to it. She also does an excellent job explaining why altruist/collectivist thinking is so prevalent in society despite its failings and inconsistencies - mainly due to religion. While I personally don't care what religion (or lack thereof) one chooses, I think it is extremely helpful to look at the collectivist teachings of most religions from an Objectivist viewpoint.

I also encourage reading up on Libertarian thinking.

Stop thinking that by rotting your brain watching television that you are an informed citizen. We were the most prosperous, wealthiest country in the world. We were the most free and a bulwark built on the ideas of personal property rights, limited government, liberty, and self-reliance. In just two generations, we pissed all of it away. Now we are indebted to Communist China, our government is bloated, our Treasuries are bankrupt from "humane" socialist programs that enslave everybody to everybody else, and the people are too busy watching MTV and discussing sports or choosing between the war-mongering, sell-out Republicans or the despicable and blind progressives who wish to turn their backs on everything that made us the envy of the world to pursue their fairyland utopias. The situation makes me want to vomit! History will judge us as ridiculous fools who threw away everything and sold our own children into debt to pay for our collective stupidity under the guises of "environmentalism" and "humanitarianism"...all at the barrel of a gun held by our own representatives we were foolish enough to elect and support!
