I don't think it's wrong. For me I can't feel my playing as well when using a shoulder rest, my plastic Mach One, but unfortunately it is much more comfortable with it. Thus I only use my shoulder rest for practice and during performance I almost never use it.

You can't compare virtuosos by anything but style--how they deliver/intepret the piece. People like Perlman and Vengerov get all the music perfect the way they want it, but it's how you, the audience, want the music to be, that causes you to prefer Perlman/Vengerov!
