Update on how we did our personal Springwatch:

Grandad made the box following RSPB plans - see http://www.rspb.org.uk/advice/helpingbirds/nestboxes/smallbirds/making.asp.

We bought a camera from Henry's CCTV in London. The camera we bought was an AVC308IR with separate microphone DA10. They seem to be selling a slightly different camera now. The important thing is to get one that can be refocused to allow close-ups. The first one we got was fixed focus and no good in the nest box. Henry's was very helpful and exchanged this. Using black & white and a cable gives sharper pictures and it works in the dark with infra-red lights - but colour and wireless is quite tempting. We feed the pictures to a DVD-recorder that runs for about 8 hours a day and also we watch them on TV. We get the pictures on to Youtube using VirtualDub http://www.virtualdub.org/.

We didn't get any birds nesting in 2006 - though a couple checked it out. This year we have great results. Have fun if you try it!
