A multi-instrumentalist and composer from Nashville, Tennessee, Christopher Lowry has already enjoyed much success both as a performer and a composer. A classical violist, Lowry began violin lessons at age four, switching to the viola in 2004. A student at Vanderbilt University's prestigious Blair School of Music, Lowry is majoring in viola performance and composition. As a violist, Lowry has already achieved a number of awards and honors, such as the Jean Keller Heard award and the David Rabin award for excellence in musical performance. He has won concerto competitions and soloed with orchestras at the Eastern Music Festival in Greensboro, NC, as well as with the Curb Youth Symphony and the Vanderbilt University Orchestra. In 2007, Lowry was awarded first place in the Junior Viola Division of the American String Teacher's Association (ASTA) National Solo Competition; in 2011, he was a national finalist in the Senior Viola Division. In 2010, Lowry was selected to participate in an international composer/performer collaboration, which took place at the Royal Academy of Music in London and was led by violinist Peter Sheppard-Skaerved.

Over the summers, Lowry has attended such music festivals as the Tennessee Governor's School for the Arts, the Sewanee Summer Music Festival, Eastern Music Festival, the National Symphony/Kennedy Center Trustee's Summer Music Institute, and the Innsbrook Institute in St. Louis, MO. In 2010, his quartet, the Ars Nova String Quartet, gave a benefit concert in Vienna, Austria, and then attended the Vanderbilt Music Académie in Aix-en-Provence, France, where they studied with members of the London Symphony and Berlin Philharmonic. This summer, Ars Nova will be attending the Aspen Music Festival's Center for Advanced Quartet studies.

Lowry's orchestral experience includes seven years with the Curb (Nashville) Youth Symphony, several Side-by-Side concerts with the Nashville Symphony Orchestra, and three years with the Tennessee All-State orchestra. At Vanderbilt, Lowry has been principal violist of the University Orchestra for six semesters. He has twice played in chamber orchestras led by conductor and pianist Leon Fleisher. Lowry has also held the principal viola position in orchestras at many summer festivals.

As a composer, Lowry has already developed a unique style and voice. His orchestral work "Celebration Overture" was premiered in December 2006 by the Curb Youth Symphony. Since then, it has been performed nine times, the most noteworthy of which was by the Nashville Symphony Orchestra; it has also been transcribed for wind ensemble. Lowry was commissioned by Nashville Symphony Principal Hornist Leslie Norton and renowned percussion clinician Christopher Norton to compose Duo for Horn and Percussion. His "Suite for Viola and Piano" received Honorable Mention in the New York Art Ensemble Competition and first place in the state level of the 2010 MTNA Composer Competition. His clarinet piece "Cascades" won first place in the Anton Stadler Composition Contest; it will be recorded by virtuoso Marc Naylor and published by Edition Lyrique.

Lowry's primary viola teachers include Kathryn Plummer, Daniel Reinker, John Kochanowski, and Mary Helen Law; his main composition teachers include Michael Kurek, Michael Slayton, Michael Alec Rose, Stan Link, and Carl Smith.
