14-year-old in grandmother's car dies, friend injured in police chase

Share Del.icio.usDiggTwitterFacebookStumbleUponEmail Close [X]Kolin Johnson was trying to turn his life around. With his mother dying about a year and half ago and his father not a steady presence, the 14-year-old had led a difficult life, his family said. And that often meant trouble.

But over the last few months, Kolin had been making an effort to change. He began trying harder at his school work — aiming to leave alternative school and return to public school. He even regularly started going to church.

That's why family members said they don't understand what led Kolin to take his grandmother's car without permission early Tuesday morning and then lead a state trooper in a chase. The pursuit ended in a crash that killed the boy and injured his 13-year-old passenger.

"It's such a senseless death," said the boy's great-grandmother, 73-year-old Betty McCurdy. "Because he knew the difference between right and wrong, he knew he shouldn't have driven the car and he knew he should have stopped."

Authorities told family members a Department of Public Safety state trooper had tried to stop a car that ran a red light on Texas 75 near Willis in north Montgomery County around 1 a.m. The driver didn't stop and sped away.

"All we can figure is that he was just scared," said his cousin, Abby Bunch, 25.

The trooper followed the vehicle, which traveled north into Walker County. At some point the teenager — who authorities estimate was driving about 100 mph — lost control of the car at a turn.

The vehicle left the road and then smashed into a utility pole, authorities said.

Friends call family
Kolin died at the scene. His passenger, whose name has not been released, was flown to Memorial Hermann-The Texas Medical Center. Authorities did not release details of the boy's injuries or his condition.

Kolin's relatives said the boy was a friend and had spent a few nights at his home but did not know his full name or parents.

On Tuesday afternoon, relatives sat stunned at the Conroe home where Kolin lived with his grandmother. She was the boy's most steady adult figure, relatives said.

"Friends have been calling all day and asking was that our Kolin (in the crash)," McCurdy said as her voice cracked. "It's been so hard to tell them."

Troubled but 'good kid'
Family members described Kolin as a sweet and kind boy who loved basketball, skateboarding, video games and sneakers.

"He's been a troubled child because of his mom's death, but he was a good kid," McCurdy said.

When Kolin initially came to live with his grandmother about three years ago, he would often skip school and got into a bad crowd, his family said.

But recently he had been doing better. His family was hopeful about his progress.

"It's still like a dream," McCurdy said. "He had his whole life ahead of him."
