I am the oldest of ten children. My favorite picture of myself is me standing by a tree at family friend's farm in West Virginia. I am about 13. And it is the only picture I have of me as kid where I am completely alone. I call the picture..."Heaven". I am at my best when I am "ON". Performing, singing, teaching, telling stories, or holding court. I could write, but I haven't the patience. I am very smart, but I don't function all that well in every day things. I have never learned to drive, and I am terrible with money. An evening with a few good friends dining at one of my old standby bistros in midtown Manhattan brings me the greatest joy. I love New York, but tolerate LA for the sake of my dear partner. Who knows... But maybe if I had had more ambition, it might have been me instead of Nathan Lane! I am a good actor and I could have been a great singer. I pour my heart into my teaching. My ability to put things into words is a real gift. An old friend once said to me while I was crying at the movies...."Charles, you love sentiment on film, but you hate it in real life!"
