this is extraordinary singing, one of the very greatest recordings ever made. Total understanding of the song, totally in character, totally wonderful control of phrasing and dynamics. Very very special.

Quite simply the best short summing up of Caruso I have ever heard. 'The sheer aching beauty and humanity'. Absolutely.

Some years ago I had the privilege of attending a masterclass with Carlo Bergonzi at the Cardiff Singer of the World Competition. I don't pretend to be an expert in singing, but all I can say is that after half an hour or so good singers sounded like great singers.

'Tenor with orchestra' seems so inadequate for such a wonderful piece of singing.

Oh how wonderful. One of the very greatest tenors. Ok, he can't sing any more,and he's past it, but what a treat. The old magic is still there. Probably the most exciting of all singers after Caruso.

Totally incredible voice. One of the great miracles of the age that such a voice should be combined with such a fabulous technique.

I hope that fans of his films will listen to this. One of the great baritones. Full stop.

How easy it all sounds. This is one of the great recordings of the century, absolutely amazing. Total mastery of style, dynamics, vocal technique and a great deal of magic besides. Definitely one of my 'Desert Island Discs'.

At his best probably the greatest of all British singers, but a character with fatal flaws

The 'Lancashire Caruso', a great tenor. Apparently fell off the stage at one of the first Royal Variety Shows because he was the worse for wear.

A very underrated tenor

Wonderful ,wonderful singing. this is one of caruso's greatest records, made in 1911 I think when he was still under 40. So nothing like the end of his career. The sheer beauty of the voice and the subtlety of the singing with such delicate nuance of dynamics make this truly amazing.

Magnificent singing. I had heard of Escalais but tonight on youtube is the first time I have heard him sing. He is without doubt one of the great tenors of the century. The way he attacks the notes is unique, with the possible exception of Bergonzi, who admittedly sings a different repertoire.
