This Public Service Announcement (PSA), created by Rana Antone Haddad and Dalia Riyad Bushnaq from the Family Guidance and Awareness Center in Amman Jordan, opens with a fact - "Over 80% of domestic violence victims are women." A woman sitting on the floor of a dark room begins to crawl toward a door, which shows light pouring through from the other side. She is discouraged by the loud abusive voice of a man yelling at her from off screen. Finally, she gains the courage to open the door and light pours in -- with helping hands that takes hers. The message comes on screen, "You are not alone. Break the silence." A logo for FGAC appears with an emergency hotline for domestic abuse.
Background: This PSA was produced locally in Amman, Jordan as part of a media workshop, entitled "Media, Activism and Democracy," led by Barefoot Workshops in partnership with The Middle East Partnership Initiative (MEPI). twenty-six participants, mostly women and youth, learned how to write, shoot, produce and edit, thirty-second noncommercial videos (Public Service Announcements), to raise awareness about social issues. The goal of the workshops was to increase discussion, debate and civic participation in the Middle East. The PSAs are available in Arabic and English to broadcasters and other organizations that wish to distribute them "rights-free" on television and the Internet.
Sound design provided by Nabeel Bahy (of Kuwait). Music by Hüsnü Senlendirici (Album: Hüsn-Ü Klarnet- The Joy of Clarinet)

This Public Service Announcement (PSA) calls attention to the plight of the "stateless" people in Kuwait, who are called "biduns", literally translated as "without". Those who are "without" citizenship do not enjoy the same rights and privileges as those of legal status. They are disallowed access to free health care, dismissed from public sector employment, their children are barred from public schools, and denied documents such as birth, marriage or death certificates, as well as driver's licenses. Many biduns are natives of Kuwait who simply failed to recognize the importance of registering as citizens after Kuwait redrew its borders with neighboring countries, as late as 1991 in the case of Iraq. Many failed to complete this step owing to a traditional nomadic way of life in border areas.
The PSA features five bidun men poised silently in a remote desert landscape, their attention focused on the camera. One at a time, they turn and walk off camera, and their bodies melt into the landscape like ghosts. Their voices, echo hauntingly, with the statements, "I am without healthcare.", "I am without a passport.", "I am without an education.", "I am without a job." The final image is of the face of the last man, as he says, "Don't leave us without a future." The logo of Kuwait Human Rights Society appears with the fact- "In Kuwait, there are almost 100,000 individuals 'without' nationality who are facing human rights violations." First-time director, Noorah Hadeed, is a 27-year old volunteer event coordinator for the Kuwait Society for Human Rights. She graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in Architecture from R.I.S.D. in 2003. She was assisted by another KSHR volunteer, Ms. Muna Al-Hamer.

This Public Service Announcement (PSA) displays facts about health complications that can result from obesity between images of a red balloon getting pumped with air- bigger and bigger until it fills the whole frame. "45% of people in Kuwait between the ages of 6-19 are overweight," the text says." Obesity inhibits activity in the area of the brain affecting language, memory, vision and speech," A final WARNING sign appears with more facts about the side affects of obesity: "Obesity can cause high blood pressure, insomnia, depression, and low self-esteem." The sound of a balloon popping over this final message is meant to startle and wake up the audience to the dangers of early obesity.
This video was created by Suhaila Al-Salem, a board member and active leader within the civil society organization, Women Cultural Social Society. She wishes to educate both parents and youth about possible health complications caused by childhood obesity, a relatively new problem in Kuwait. Suhaila would like to create a movement of Kuwaitis committed to tackling the issue of childhood obesity, and to build a widespread public awareness campaigns through this and other Public Service Announcements. She also wishes to call parents attention to bad habits formed by their children at an early age, such as eating while watching television or playing video games, neglecting to exercise, and over-consuming fast foods, which result in weight gain and impaired health.
In addition to Suhaila's activism, she organizes women's health initiatives through Women Cultural Society, and activities for women to gain business and networking skills to open their own businesses in Kuwait.
She is the primary contact for the Kuwait NGO Film Club that formed after a two-week workshop led by Barefoot Workshops at the Radisson SAS in Kuwait. She plans to continue creating her own PSA's and facilitating monthly meeting for the club. Please contact Suhaila if you would like to join the Kuwait NGO Film Club, or if you would like to broadcast the groups PSAs on regional networks in The Middle East. Email: suhaila_alsalem@yahoo.com
