Ian Ball divides his time between law and music. A barrister since 2006, Ian is an advocate in the litigation department of an international business consultancy. However, his first love is music and Ian pursues a busy schedule as a recitalist, conductor, singer and composer.

Ian was born in Lancashire in 1967 and educated at Bolton School. After a year as a Lay Clerk in the choir of St Mary's Cathedral, Edinburgh, Ian won an organ scholarship to read Music at St Peter's College, Oxford. He went on to study organ, harpsichord and conducting at the Royal Northern College of Music, holding the organ scholarship at Manchester Cathedral and winning top prizes in the Advanced Performance Diploma examinations. A Fellow of the Royal College of Organists, Ian's organ teachers have included David Sanger, Gordon Stewart and Peter Hurford. From 1999-2001 Ian was privileged to study in Paris with Messiaen's successor at La Trinité, Naji Hakim.

Before training as a mediator led him to study law, Ian enjoyed a successful career as a musician, holding posts at Bristol, Clifton and Gloucester cathedrals. He was Assistant and then Acting Director of Music at Gloucester from 1998 until 2002. Ian has also taught at two Bristol schools, several of his pupils winning scholarships to cathedrals, conservatories and Oxbridge. From 2002 until 2007 Ian was Director of Music of Gloucester's city churches, overseeing the restoration of the 18th-century organ of St Mary de Lode in 2004.

As a recitalist, Ian has performed throughout the UK and Europe and has twice toured the United States to critical acclaim. He has performed in three Three Choirs Festivals, drawing praise for a "dazzling technique and colouristic imagination". Ian has also broadcast on television and radio and made several CD recordings, his disc of French organ music from Gloucester Cathedral winning five stars in the BBC Music Magazine.

Ian has played in gala concerts with international virtuosi Marisa Robles, Carlo Curley and Malcolm Archer; has performed with the Philharmonia Orchestra and Bournemouth Sinfonietta; and appeared as concerto soloist with the Regency Sinfonia, the Emerald Ensemble and UWE Symphony Orchestra.

A popular and charismatic conductor, Ian founded youth choirs at Clifton and Gloucester cathedrals and has been Director of Bristol Chamber Choir, Bristol Phoenix Choir, Gloucester Choral Society and the St Cecilia Singers. Last season Ian was guest conductor of both the Mid-Somerset Orchestra and Taunton Choral Society in concerts which included Beethoven's Eighth Symphony, Duruflé's Requiem, Bruch's Violin Concerto and Vaughan Williams' Fifth Symphony. In March 2010 he conducted the Wyre Forest Symphony Orchestra in a programme including Brahms' Third Symphony.
