Protecting water, wildlife, and wildplaces in the central Sierra Nevada since 1990.

The Central Sierra Environmental Resource Center (CSERC) is an extremely effective non-profit organization that makes a huge difference for the Northern Yosemite region of the Sierra Nevada. CSERC uses creative strategies and widespread education efforts to defend local forests, rivers, wildlife, and wild places. Current environmental threats include clearcutting, chemical treatments, sprawling new development, and the loss of critical wildlife habitat. CSERC staff uses science-based fieldwork and monitoring along with active advocacy to respond to every proposed development project across 2 million acres of the local region. The Center undertakes wildlife surveys for rare species; plus CSERC staff scientists take photos and measure impacts to mountain meadows and riparian areas across the region. CSERC also leads volunteers in hands-on restoration project and provides free slide programs to more than 5,000 students in urban areas per year.
With only a small staff and limited funding, CSERC manages to run full-page educational ads in local newspapers, provide key information to the media more than 200 times per year, and attend over 100 meetings annual to serve as nature's voice in this world renowned region.
