I've been in cities in Europe and Japan where you can go virtually everywhere on public transit (rails) and never need a car. We were in Japan for 5 weeks and only needed a car once, and that was only for a sightseeing trip. Zoning plays a large part in the success of the systems there. Corner stores in neighborhoods. All your basic amenities within walking distance. Universities, department stores, & offices all located on a rail line.

Any existing rail line doesn't really solve a transportation issue though. Existing lines only connect two existing business centers and do very little to foster development. Although it might be a challenge, offering the creation of new transit routes open up travel and use to a plethora of new users , which in turn can rejuvinate the neighborhoods along the way. A point a) to point b) existing line is just a small people mover that eliminates a much larger portion of transit users who would then need other means of transportation once reaching the desired destination.

I agree it's a great channel. Thanks for helping fight the Met Councils FOLLY. I think the regional planners are just aiming to disturb and cut things up! There are existing rail routes from Minneapolis to Saint Paul which are better suited to anyone who knows and lives in either city.
Same with the plan to run South East. Take it past the walker and all the old school train depos like Hopkins, smart right? But no, some fools are bent on cutting up south Minneapolis and running it between Cedar lake and Calhoune. It's blatantly destructive and defies logic.

I like your channel. Very informative on the whole rail transit fiasco of the Twin Cities. We should have stuck to Lowry's original masterplan.
