Show vs. Go
American catch wrestling differs from other forms of catch wrestling in that it concentrates on hook -- holds that are designed to break bones and snap ligaments or tendons. These holds are quite tight and are more than mere concession holds, in that when they are done correctly there is little time for a tap out. Snap, no tap, as we say.
This first installment of what we hope will be an ongoing series called "Show vs. Go" compares real catch wrestling "hooks" with more frequently taught "catch" holds often labeled "catch" holds that are, in fact, the kinds of "working" holds used by many pro wrestlers -- particularly those who popularized pro wrestling in the 40s, 50s, and 60s in the US, and then in Japan in the 70s and 80s.
These working holds can be effective; but they are designed both to "sell" concession holds to an audience and to protect the "opponent" (who is generally compliant) and so therefore rely on bigger movements and more space, both of which diminish their effectiveness against skilled wrestlers.
In this series, we'll show you both the working holds and the hooks, and we'll show you the relatively easy counters for the working holds.
