This has nothing to do with Prokofiev's vision. It races over everything to the point of losing the whole line, a la Argerich. Try early Glenn Gould.

I say it was. Genius. After all, this is WAR! Gould knew it, and felt it, and played it correctly. Damn the fast tempi. This is the stuff.

I don't agree at all. Horowitz' 1953 version may be fraught with nerves, but the passion is there in spades. I hear a very fast tempo here, but not a lot of passion.

Wouldn't it have been fun to be there when Horowitz scared everyone to death in the early 20s?

What a wonderfully sober interpretation! The only that irks me is a strange out-of-tuneness in the piano's mid range, noticable in the bridge...

I saw him play this at Carnegie in 1978. I was sitting in a box seat, and I swear the sound was coming from the ceiling. I was blessed to hear him live in 1968 in Chicago in and 1978 in NYC. I've never heard anything like Vlad.

I'm learning this now, and I go back and forth between renditions. I'm torn between Horowitz 40s version and this one. Gould's last mov't is a little sluggish, but his 1st mov't seems to be the closest to what I imagine Serge's vision was...the super fast versions seems to sound more clowny than...

Horowitz always had the uncanny ablility to clarify the most difficult pieces. I do like this performance, but I would suggest removing some of the clutter would help.
