I heard a recording of this when I was in high school and have been looking for it on youtube every now and then. Happened upon yesterday and I love this. I really do not care that Dinah can't sing for crap. The arrangement, the band and most of all Maynard sound outstanding.

I really have tried, but I just can not get into Cat Anderson. Too squeaky, lame improvisation etc. I know it is tough because I just compare everyone to Maynard, but still. I am just not a fan.

I have heard a few guys try this. Arturo, Eric Miyashiro, Adrea Tofanelli etc. Scott Englebright definitely did the best out of any of those guys.

I have WAY worse. I am more concerned about how much it sped up. Plus, there were some challenging 3rd and 4th parts in there. I thought that wan't half bad.

I can watch videos of trumpeters passing out all day long. When I was in college a kid I knew fainted and landed on his trumpet and completely squished it. $300 repair later....

As a musician and band director, I should be ticked that someone did this, but I think it is absolutely hilarious. The guys in the band are trying so hard to stay marching at attention and they are glancing up out of the corner of their eyes. It is also hilarious how bad the trumpet playing is wh...

So amazing to see Maynard, in his later years, having an off night and still being able to fight for every note he possibly can. Such energy and effort, awesome.

@rdangelo Yeah, you are right. Just like how in earlier years Lynn Nicholson used to play all the extreme upper register stuff and later on Alan Wise. Stan was a great lead player though and always cool to see guys willing to spread the wealth. :)

That is impressive!! I judge trumpets at music competitions all the time and I can tell you that I have heard many high school students that can not even come close to playing that piece. besides the fact that many of them would not have the technical skills, most would not be able to hit the hig...

Great! I did this with my high school band a few years ago and they loved it too. Playing swing in 5/4 is no easy feat for a bunch of high schoolers.

I love this chart so much. I did this with my high school jazz band a few years back and they loved it!! Tough, but awesome.

such a hard piece of music

As a fellow band director I commend you on choosing great literature for them to learn. This is a very challenging piece in terms of meter and technique. This piece often is used as a festival piece so doing it in your school band is awesome!!

I am confused as to why you do not play the pedal C with your lips on the mouthpiece properly?
