Jeppe Hostel, situated in the inner city of Johannesburg, South Africa, is home to a number of Zulu migrant workers. Each week, the Hostel hosts "isicathamiya" music competitions as well as best-dressed competitions in which "swankas" compete. ( Swankas are men who pride themselves on their fine clothing and shoes.) The word "isicathamiya" means "in a tip-toeing style" and describes the cat-like motions of the feet of the male singers while they perform. This musical form is a hybrid of gospel as well as traditional Zulu music. It is performed by all-male groups and is always acapella. At Jeppe Hostel, the isicathamiya musical performances kick off at about 10PM, followed by the "best dressed man" competition. Both competitions are judged by strangers who have been plucked off the streets, selected for their impartiality. (A typical evening will start around 10PM and continue through to about 6AM the following morning.) *Apologies for the soft sound on this video. Please use headphones to best hear the audio.*

Getting Ready Parts 1 & 2 2 x 23 minutes Being the first African country to host the FIFA World Cup™ puts a heavy responsibility on South Africa to get it right. This documentary looks at how the billions of dollars allocated to making sure the 2010 World Cup™ is a success are being spent, and crucially, whether the new stadiums and roads will be ready in time. www.littlebird.ie http://totalsoccer2007.blogspot.com/

The Last Line of Defence Parts 1 & 2 2 x 23 minutes A heartening observational documentary on three boys who have chosen to go for the least glamorous but most vital position on the football pitch -- goalie. The trio are part of an elite squad trained by Farouk Abrahams, the goal keeping coach for the national squad when they played in the 2002 FIFA World Cup™. The film tracks Sipho, Mohammed and Joshua -- who are black, Indian and white respectively -- both on and off the pitch and builds up an illuminating picture of the huge changes that are taking place in post-apartheid South Africa. www.littlebird.ie http://totalsoccer2007.blogspot.com/
