Mountain Top Removal Mining is a growing issue in Appalachia that many on the outside world do not know about. I hope to use this channel to bring some of these issues to light for the world outside to understand and call for an end to the destruction and devastation of MTR mining. I know by doing this I will become an enemy to some. I will most likely be shouted down at and threatened, but, like so many others against MTR, I will not waver.

This may give some of you a chance to get some back ground behind who I am as a person before you make a judgment. Its kind of long but here goes.

I consider myself an average person with a lot of history here in Appalachia. I grew up in Boone County, the heart of the coal fields in Southern West Virginia. My father is a Vietnam Veteran who came home from the war and went into the coal mines to support his family. Now in his 60's, he only retired a few years ago. He worked hard to see to it my sister and I never had to mine coal. His grandfather came home from World War I, only to pick up another gun and fight at the Battle of Blair Mountain. He was one of the lucky ones to return home.

My mother is a Paramedic, and former Firefighter, and has risked her life countless times over 18 years of service to save others. Her father would spend all night digging coal, only to come home and spend much of the day plowing fields and tending to the animals to see to it his 9 children had food on the table. All you have to do is change the name of the hollow in the song "Coal Miners Daughter," and you would know how she grew up. My mothers family has resided in the Appalachia area since before the Revolution. I have had family fight in almost every war since the Revolution. I descend from a long line of coal miners on BOTH sides of my family. Coal is in my veins.

I have always been proud of my heritage, especially being descended from a long line of coal miners. Then comes the issue of Mountain Top Removal Mining. An issue I only recently became involved with. Growing up, I knew we had MTR in the state and I knew some were against it. I had heard much of the propaganda they use to paint those against it as "extreme militant environmentalists," and that it was all blown out of proportion. I though of it all as a "necessary evil." That was until June, 2009, when a MTR mine approached my family's 200 year old ancestral cemetery. They began to deny us access, which is against the law. I then soon found out that it is happening to other cemeteries across Appalachia.

I began doing more research on MTR. I started finding out things like poisoned water, valley fills, uprooted towns, the intimidation, the threats. I started forming my own conclusions based on the evidence in books, news articles, statistics, in pictures, and video. Over the next several months I came to find others had came to the same conclusions. Then I got the chance to fly over some of the areas. This was a huge deal for me because I have been afraid of heights for a very long time. I over came my fear and once in the air, I was shocked and disgusted at the magnitude these MTR sites were. They werent sporadic like I had originally thought, many side by side. I had my wake up call and chose a side. If there is one thing that has been passed down in my family legacy that was instilled in me, that is to fight for what you believe in is right. I believe it is what my ancestors would want. The struggle against mountain top removal has become my battle too.

I generally like to think for myself and will often do research and listen to all sides of an argument before I come to a conclusion.

I am not now, nor have I ever been a "Hippie." I personally hate the word. Hippies were people who dodged the draft, got high, and had sex while my father put his life on the line in the name of Freedom. I will never be a Hippie.

My political views are usually something I try not to discuss. I tend to have my own views that are closer to Republican than Democrat. I voted for Bush my first time around. I dont regret it. I still believe he was the right man to deal with what was happening globally at the time. I, and I'll say it, did not vote for Obama. Currently I feel that the only thing his administration has done right so far is take a closer look at the MTR issue. Of course, by now, I'm sure I am getting boos and hisses from some so I will move on.

Another thing I feel has been instilled in me is a strong work ethic. I work long and hard. Sometimes 40 to 60 hours a week. I hardly miss a day, having to be pretty much hospitalized just to call in sick.

I will work just as hard to see a possible end to Mountain Top Removal. Please, understand I do not wish to be an enemy of coal. To say I was against coal all together would be a direct insult to my heritage. Coal is an important part of West Virginias history and economy. I personally would settle for smart, respectable coal over Clean Coal. However, Mountain Top Removal Mining is the biggest opposition to both clean and respectful coal and I believe mining should be done the traditional way of deep mining. It provides more job opportunities and does not drastically change the geography of my state. They are hurting people and the environment and getting away with it, and the future is at jeopardy for many in my state. I LIKE MY COAL MOUNTAIN TOP SAFE!
