My Soapbox:
I have come across a small number of Arabs who try to dissociate themselves from their Arab identity. They say things like: "I am not Arab - I am Phoenician" or "I am Canaanite" or some other long-dead tribe. It is as if they are ashamed of their Arab identity. To those people, I say this:

The Arab civilisation has been one of the most generous and inclusive civilisations in the history of mankind. Many millions of people today identify themselves as Arab, not just because of their ethnicity, but also because their ancestors, who may have been non-Arab originally, chose to adopt the Arabic culture and language. Through this, they became heirs to a civilisation that has enriched humanity in so many different ways.

Present-day Arabs who are looking for a way to shed their Arab identity,
do so out of profound ignorance and a lack of self-respect. They have been defeated by the constant campaign of distortion and hatred directed against our people by malevolent forces.

Instead of denying their cultural heritage, they should defend it when it is attacked unfairly, and criticise it constructively when the need arises.

That would be the honourable thing to do.

But unfortunately, what some choose to do is to walk away from their people when the going gets tough. Not only is that the ultimate betrayal, it is also a shameful display of cowardice.
