Byron Hurt is an award-winning documentary filmmaker, a published writer, and an anti-sexist activist. His most celebrated documentary, "Hip-Hop: Beyond Beats and Rhymes" premiered at the 2006 Sundance Film Festival. It was later broadcast nationally on the Emmy award-winning PBS series Independent Lens, drawing an audience of more than 1.3 million viewers. To date, "Hip-Hop: Beyond Beats and Rhymes" (BBR) has been selected to appear in more than 50 film festivals worldwide and The Chicago Tribune named it "one of the best documentary films in 2007."

His most recent documentary, "Barack & Curtis," (a part of The Masculinity Project) is helping to shift how the media and the general public view masculinity in Black men by comparing and contrasting President Barack Obama and Curtis "50 Cent" Jackson.

Thank you thank you thank you......... an intelligent discussion fully contextualized re black masculinity in relation to a myraid of topics, makse me proud to be part of the community. All we need is a movement to awaken the power of true masulinity in all its complexity, asking the only question we as a community have buried deep in are psyches, "What are the legacies of black masculinity in the context of shame/guilt re enslavement"?

I enjoyed Barack and Curtis. I find it an interesting contrast and one that is definitely challenging intelleuctally and culturally.

Are there going to be follow ups to this particular topic? I hope so.
I enjoy seeing black males discuss this aspect of our culture. Especially since there is room for all of the brothers to fit into the conversation.

Barack and Curtis is a great short film. I look forward to viewing more of your work.
