the basic principle of this exercise i think is a spot on idea. I love it and will be making a point of giving that a try very soon.

giveing idea based on measurement i would not be able to say but my experience when working with any kind of small flame to do similar stuff such as boiling water n a cup I place it at a height that allows the flame to spread as much as possible over the bottom of the cup with out going past...
