* What is the action?
To mark the 22nd anniversary of the 1988 student uprising in Burma, the U.S. Campaign for Burma has launched Oppose Burma's Sham Elections, a campaign to press U.S. and world leaders to take a firmer line and not recognize the upcoming sham elections or its undemocratic results in the country of Burma.
The campaign centers on the concerns among activists and supporters of Burma that in a climate of mounting violence against innocent civilians and with millions disenfranchised in refugee camps, there cannot be credible elections in Burma. We must do everything we can not to legitimize the dictatorial rule of Than Shwe.
* What can you do?
Record a brief video addressed to specific heads of states and UN Secretary General Bank Ki-Moon, urging them not to support this sham election and this criminal regime!
After you are done making the video, upload it onto YouTube, titled "Oppose Burma's Sham Elections". Once you finish uploading the video, send a copy of the link to our staff, Nadi Hlaing at nadi@uscampaignforburma.org
* Why should you take this action?
Over 2 million people are displaced inside Burma, with hundreds of thousands more living in refugee camps, landless and rightless. All of this, plus the ongoing violence against ethnic minorities and draconian election laws, have caused key opposition candidates including Aung San Suu Kyi to boycott the sham elections.
No doubt, the regime is attempting to fool the world by using elections as a diversion tactic to perpetuate military rule in the country for decades to come.
At the same time, the regime continues its brutal crackdown on human rights activists and carries out scorched-earth campaigns against ethnic civilians that has resulted in the destruction of over 3,500 villages and earned them the condemnations of governments around the world.
As a result, Aung San Suu Kyi, her political party, and the ethnic leadership have decided to say NO to continued military rule by boycotting these sham elections. The world must rally to their cause!
