Figuring it out...A god is a being created by humans and given supernatural powers or attributes such as immortality, omniscience, telekinesis, and invisibility. These creations serve many purposes, such as imaginary protection from enemies or explanations for the origin of such things as good and evil, fire and wind, or life and death.
Gods are often the central figures around which religions are built. It is often claimed that religion began in fear and superstition. The same might be said for gods.
Some religions maintain that there is just one God and that all the gods of all religions except theirs were created by human beings. Yet, everyone who believes in a god of some sort believes their god is real.
Since gods are supernatural, they exist outside the bounds and laws of space and time. They can possess any of an infinite array of magical powers. Hence, there is no way to prove or disprove their reality. One might say: If gods exist, anything goes!
A common attack on atheism is that without god, humanity is lost and aimless. Without an omnipotent father to guide us, we have no hope and are little more than animals. I will concede the second point; in a scientific sense human beings are animals. But i would have to ask if this is something to be mourned or something to be lauded? If we are indeed animals then we stand as a testament to what can be achieved from something as simple as single cell organisms, and as a sign of how far life still has the potential to progress. True our consciousness is likely the result of countless millenia of evolution, but does that reduce its value? My point is devoted to two questions, the first is the question of humanities value in a universe in which we are creations of an omnipotent being. The second question is the opposite, the question humanity's value in a cosmos apparently empty of such omnipotence.
Since there are myriad creation myths and beliefs in the divine, for the sake of this I am only speaking of those related to the Judeo-Christian belief system. And for the sake of the question, this part will take it as an a priori fact that the bible is true. In such a universe, the omnipotent being known as Yahweh has created humanity because he desired fellowship with them. He has assigned them the task of domesticating the earth and multiplying upon it. And they are beset by evils in the form of Yahweh's renegade angel Satan, who will ultimately try to destroy his former master's creation. However, the problem with all of this is Yahweh's omnipotence. Because he is all-powerful there is never really a chance that he might be defeated, everything that happens only happens because he either makes it happen, or allows it to happen. All of creation is merely an idle game Yahweh is playing where the stakes might appear high for his creations, but in which he always holds all the cards. With absolute power at his command, it really is of no consequence to his plans whether people go along with them or not, in fact their disobedience is always forseen and caused by him as a part of the plan. Humanity's only role in this universe is as a set of toys to be used and tossed aside by a deity that is only truly interested in alleviating its own bordeom.
The evidence currently available, and the testing of multiple biological models all suggests that humanity has evolved all the way from simple organisms, into the complexity of its modern form. Regarding evolution as the scientific theory it is, and respecting it as the best explanation of how life has reached its current form does not necessarily negate the idea of a deity. So for the sake of this part the focus is not on evolution, but on the proposal that the universe is utterly devoid of the divine, and any kind of life after death. In this universe humanity is a very small speck of life in an otherwise unremarkable part of the galaxy, and the larger universe in general. We are at the mercy of countless dangers, some of our own design, that could destroy us and our entire planet. There is no divine mission, no absolute goal, and no definitive reason to live. However, the lack of the absolute does not negate the relative, in fact the relative is made more important by the lack of absolute. By this I may say more plainly that in the absence of god, human life is not trivialized, it is given absolute importance. The fact that we must die does not ruin the beauty of life, it enhances it. Because we are finite we must cherish each other and our world as much as we can because we have no afterlife to look forward to. Instead of being the preliminary, our life in this world is the main event.
"The word god is for me nothing more than the expression and product of human weaknesses, the Bible a collection of honourable, but still primitive legends which are nevertheless pretty childish. No interpretation no matter how subtle can (for me) change this." --Albert Einstein
"The mind works best when it is open". -Einstein
