11/9/09: Obama does not plan to travel to Germany to attend the 20th anniversary celebration Monday of the fall of the Berlin Wall. The White House says he simply does not have the time to go, with the weeklong tour of Asia trip starting Wednesday. He plans to travel to Oslo next month to accept the Nobel Peace Prize. "Barack Is Too Busy," Germany's Der Spiegel magazine declared in a headline last month, writing that Obama had declined Chancellor Merkel's invitation.

11/7/09: The health care bill passed in the House of Representatives by a 220-215 vote Saturday night. Anh "Joseph" Cao, the only Republican to back the health care bill in the House Saturday night, said the Obama administration invested considerable time in him. He said Obama spoke with him for "a period of a couple weeks" and that Obama's staff spoke with him "on a number of occasions," before the vote. Cao won in an upset election last December, ousting embattled Democratic Rep. William Jefferson, who has since been convicted on federal corruption charges.

10/30/09: The U.S. Senate approved the Department of Homeland Security Appropriations Act of 2010, after it had been stripped of the provision to build an additional 700 miles of reinforced fencing along the southern border. Senator Jim DeMint, (R-South Carolina), voted against the bill and was not alone in criticizing those who helped defeat the amendment. However, Senate Homeland Security Appropriations Subcommittee chairman Robert Byrd, (D-West Virginia), argued before the vote that the wall was "too proscriptive and too costly," and that the bill included funds to hire more Border Patrol officers. Among other elements in the $42.8 billion bill are provisions that allow prisoners from Guantanamo Bay to be transferred to the U.S.
