@nickd929 There is (very, very probably) no helmet law for people older than 15 in New York City. There is a statewide law for passengers younger than 5 and cyclists younger than 14. See helmets . org / mandator . htm For an introduction to the science on helmets check out the wikipedia article ...

@thirteenfingers Cycling can be safer per mile, also, especially for certain age groups, and if only "normal streets" in cities and towns are included ( highways/ carriageways are excluded). Check out e.g. "Cycling the way ahead for tows and cities", available via web search as a PDF from EU DG ...

Lifting Bicycle ambulance stretcher from hut

@vikidobe : For a complete novice, it might be a problem to use messenger bags. Many people cycle with backpacks /rucksacks with two straps, which might give better balance. But panniers mounted on a luggege rack is much more comfortable for "longer" rides ( > 5 km or so in my experience)
