Weren't they good times? There was more laughing and cheering and booing and all round fun in the air. And the drivers had to work bloody hard, too -- no fancy gear, just wring its neck and fight the thing round each bend! Best of all: no silencers. Heroes, all of 'em.
I saw the rpm pass 10,000 on that 'old fashioned' heavy two-valve pushrod motor --- out of this world. I can remember when little overhead-cam motors in sports cars couldn't exceed 7,000rpm. Fantastic.
