Brock Country roused the country scene with an impressive rumble in 2010 with 'The Year'. Beginning as a tender personal project his independent album quickly became one of the most exciting debuts yet released in 2010.
Its title track burst onto the All Australian Top 20 Country Countdown and grew in popularity as an upbeat drought breaker about hope and family in an ever fickle life on the land. 'The Year' is the clear heart of this album and Brock Country's reasons for making it. It is about making each moment count, weathering hard times and coming out with a new respect for life, and finally, love for the most important people in his life -- family. "There have been some tough times over the years and the one thing that's never missing in our family is love and support". 'The Year' is an album dedicated most especially to his two children Rani and Bayden.
Life took the former footballer and born-and-bred Forster boy down some very different paths before he would call himself a musician. As a rugby league rookie he played in Australia and overseas as a beefy front row forward in the Under 17s NSW Country (Country Vs City), NSW Country 1sts, Penrith Panthers, and finally the USA's Connecticut Wildcats. Swapping football boots for the open road he worked as a tiler tradesman in cities, small towns, and remote communities.
It's fair to say that Brock Country's musical career had been incubating around smoky campfires with his guitar over many years -- in places like Barrington Tops and the western plains of NSW. The campfire became an intimate stage, the fire-lit faces of friends and family - an audience. He didn't know it then -- but these special nights were the roots of what was to later become Brock Country's musical debut.
It was in the western NSW town of Coonamble that a 40 year old Moody Hawaiian Lap Steele guitar found its way into Brock Country's hands. It had re-emerged (complete with original strings) from the shed of his friend - an old shearer and outback hidden-talent. No one was to know then that the vintage guitar would be dusted off to stage a spine tingling comeback in two tracks from The Year -- "Rusty" and "Higher". Stories like this bring to light the genuine charm and earthiness at play in this musician's journey.
Writing songs with an engaging honesty and freshness, the wide appeal of Brock Country and his music lies not only in the colourful characters and landscapes of country and outback Australia (Brock's workplace and playground), or in his vibrant catalogue of life experience, but in a more general 'grounded-ness'. You see, throughout the twists and turns in this man's journey, his compass has remained pointed solidly at the important things -- family and friends. And it shows.
It's for good reason that one music journalist described Brock Country as "not a mere breath of fresh air -- more of a gale warning". Put simply, Brock Country is talent to watch - just hold on to your hats while you do!
