The Dream of a Swan. This video was created in 2005 when BBT/School of Russian Ballet was located at the Shorefront YM-YWHA of Brighton-Manhattan Beach. Because we had such small studios, our dancers enjoyed making fun of the limited space. Since then we have moved to Kingsborough Community College where our studios are much bigger and the dancers can do their turns without hitting each other. However, BBT continues to grow and we are developing our fundraising efforts, so kindly support us that we can keep dancing for you for many more years to come.

This video is about the history of BBT/School of Russian Ballet in 80's - early 90's.
Brighton Ballet Theater, a not-for-profit organization, was founded in 1987, in the heart of the Russian-American Cultural District of Brighton Beach in Brooklyn, New York. In a small studio, the first ballet class was taught to five young girls, yet the school quickly bloomed to fifty students, and within a year, more than a hundred-and-fifty students attended.
For the director Irina Roizin, founding a ballet school was a childhood dream. Irina studied Russian character dance and gymnastics in Ukraine, but stopped dancing after she came to the United States at age seventeen. Ten years later, her passion for dance was rekindled as she began to train with two sisters, Rona and Galina Rybak, who had learned the art of ballet from the renowned Agrippina Vaganova.
The old Russian school of ballet and its teaching methods provide the basis for the Vaganova Method of teaching classical ballet. The Vaganova Method was first developed by Agrippina Vaganova (1879-1951). She developed a unique and effective method of training a classical dancer, a method of poetic spirituality, purely Russian cantilena of dancing movements, and of lavishness and conciseness of plastique.
The Vaganova Method has been, and still is developed by her followers. The method aims at precision, strength and ability, as well as teaching students to dance with their whole body instead of isolating body parts into mechanical, separate movements. Considered excellent, the method is the most common ballet teaching method in Russia and parts of Europe, and is popular in the North America and other parts in the world.
Acknowledged the world over as the foremost training program, The Vaganova Method is known for instilling in its students artistic clarity through the use of the upper body, the acquiring harmonious movements, the widening of expressive range, and for the development of a strong center for adagio and allegro work. More graceful and powerful performances result....

"The Radish", pronounced Repka in Russian, is an ancient Russian folk-tale that has been retold for hundreds of years to children in Russia. Now for the first time it will be told to children in Brooklyn through a colorful rendition of Russian music and dance, performed by children from Brighton Ballet Theater and the Golden Rooster music folk ensemble.
Beginning in September 2001, Brighton Ballet Theater /School of Russian Ballet offered a new class for students called "Russian Song and Dance in Russian Folk Tales." In this class students, between the ages of 4-12 years old, studied famous Russian folk tales, learning about the history, costumes, song, music and dance. The song and music lessons were taught by Irina Zagornava, the founder of the music folk ensemble the "Golden Rooster," the history, costume design and dance lessons were taught by Irina Roizin and Edouard Kouchnarev from BBT. "The Radish," a thirty minute folk-ballet, will be performed by students from this class.
In this folk tale, a Russian peasant grandfather plants a tiny seed that grows into a gigantic radish. The next day the grandfather tries to dig it out - he tries and tries - but can't get it out. He calls his wife, Babka, to help and together they try but still can not pull out the stubborn radish. So they ask their grand-daughter who asks the dog, then the cat and even all together they can not pull the radish out! Finally they call a little mouse to help and with one pull the radish slides out from the soil. Sometimes all it takes is the big touch of a small hand.
