About this user

On 6th May 2010, I was elected as Member of Parliament for Houghton and Sunderland South. The community that I grew up in put their faith in me to represent them in Parliament - it is an immense privilege and responsibility.

I was educated at St Robert of Newminster School in Washington and from there went on to study Modern History at Hertford College, Oxford.

I joined the Labour Party when I was fifteen because I wanted to make a difference in my community. I grew up in a council street in Washington and witnessed first hand the injustices of life under a Tory government.

Before being elected, I worked for a local charity Wearside Women in Need managing a refuge based in the constituency for women and children fleeing domestic violence. I am proud of all Labour achieved in government over the last twelve years, but my work every day made me all too aware of the difficulties many families still face and the challenges ahead.

Following my election to Parliament, I was elected as a member of the Home Affairs Select Committee. The influential cross-party Committee examines in detail government policy and proposed changes to the law on crucial issues such as crime and anti-social behavior, policing and immigration.

I live in Hetton le Hole with my husband Lawrence and our dog Sam. We enjoy going for long walks with Sam who we found as a stray. I also enjoy reading, films and music.
