"after dodging taxis in the slums of harlem until the age of 15, dean spent most of his time writing lyrics on squares of toilet paper in the bathroom of the bowling alley his uncle would frequent. after a short creative delay, due to his fifth - nearly fatal - case of the chicken pox, dean managed to open for 'the orphans', a quasi-popular post-punk band from new jersey with a habit of hugging their equipment after every show instead of pulling a crowd-pleasing 'pete townshend' on stage. (an image-molding technique that never officially took off, but is still kept alive in some smaller venues of raleigh and williamsburg.) on that fateful night, karl darby, a record executive from 'dumbfound records' was sitting at the second table from the kitchen door, stranded after a night of gambling in atlantic city left him with a lifted $50 chip in his sock and a black eye.
technical difficulties resulted in an electric fire behind the stage, which gave dean a seeming stage presence that rivaled metallica, circa 1992. before the roadies for 'the orphans' had the chance to reach for fire extinguishers, the blaze spread to the kitchen which resulted in a sizable gas explosion, instantly leveling half of the building, and burying karl under several thousand pounds of rubble.
even though this episode literally flattened his chance of discovery at that juncture, dean never gave up the dream, and remembers how close he was to stardom with every restaurant table votive he snuffs."

i write my music very simply. i first figure out a piece of music and then free-verse lyrics over it while recording with a micro tape voice recorder. usually those lyrics are the ones i use. anything illegible is tweaked later.

i think the importance of my lyrics are the tonal additions to the songs. i never think about the words i want to say, but in retrospect the lyrics are very pointed at the time i've written them. i guess i have a hyper-active subconscious...
