Barbalian was probably due to how Ls and Rs are interchangable in Japan (this game is Japan only). I highly doubt it was done to avoid a lawsuit since the word Barbarian has been around for a long time.

The Atari 8 bit Berzerk is a finished proto that just happens to be near identical, if not identical, not a hack. Excellent port either way, though. I love how it has the voice, especially when other 800/5200 games like Pole Position and Wizard of Wor lack the voice of the arcade.

@DamienColletti The Atari 8 bit line wasn't short lived. The first one, the 400 came out in the 70s and it went up to the XE line in the mid to late 80s. 800s and 800XLs aren't exactly rare either.

The game has a suicide button because it's one of those puzzle games where you can mess up and have to restart. The Lolo games have one too and the game wouldn't be the same if it left you having to reset instead of being able to lose a life to try again.
