About this user

I was born on a cold september morning at the Gary Methodist Hospital in Gary Indiana. The year was 1966 and the world was much different then. As I grew I can remember looking around the room at the strangers that I called my family. I always felt distant from them as if I didn't belong. My handler was my mother Virginia Duncan to whom I loved dearly but it was a strange love like that feeling you get when you don't know someone. She was a very big part of my life after the divorce from her husband John E. Sheppard. Which to this day I havn't had the pleasure of getting to know. You geust it, a single mother now raising me and my year younger sister Tracy Ann Sheppard. Needless to say , we were poor the kind of poor were its nescessary to dream of dreams that will never come true. My mom always said "never say never" ,and ironically died never becoming rich like she'd always wanted, and never fullfilling her dreams. I hope that she's rich now so that I can be wrong about that. As a very young boy at the age of five; I remember running thru the sprinklers at my aunt Judy's house with my cousins Chris,Martha,David, and Becky .Duncan was my older cousin and he was always very nice to me and Tracy. My Aunt Judy and my Aunt Trudy were my mom,s sisters and they had two brothers Uncle Greg and Uncle Kim.Younger more rebelious brothers I might add. At the time we all lived on or near clay street in Miller across the tracks from the prodominantly rich Jewish community of Miller Beach in Gary Indiana. Lots of poor, young men died in Vietnam so that wealthy people could have dinner parties and celebrate the deaths of those young men. If I were old enough to understand what was going on I would have new heros besides Batman,Superman,Spiderman, and they would be the Weathermen, The Black Panther Party, And the Grateful Dead, who fought dilligently stateside for the rights of the common man. I'm sure I was rocking in my cradle to the smooth sounds of motown, Marvin Gay and Diana Ross with the drunken ambiance of Bob Dillon and his poetic justice that was unleashed upon the earth, carried on thru Martin Luthur Kings dream about the future led us into a post war nightmare that only the spirit world can fix.

The year was 1971 and spring was in the air for we had joy we had fun, had would be the key word there. I remember floating peacfully on a flat, plastic raft in my Aunt Judy's above ground pool. I was five years old when the raft tipped over I sank like a rock to the bottom of the pool letting all the air out of my lungs, overwhelmed by the peaceful calm that came over me. I was drowning and it was peaceful like a dream because I had no context to place the fear I was suppose to feel, afterall I had never drowned before or knew anyone who did. I could see the shimmering light of the sun hitting the surface of the pool as I floated down to the bottom. It seemed like I was at the bottom of the pool for an eternity. I could hear the muffled screams of my Aunt and my cousin Becky. Sudenly I was wisked out of the pool.Still unconcious I could hear everthing that was going on as if I wasnt attatched to my body. I remember how painful it was to be pulled back in to myself in a rush of flashing indescribable pain as Becky pulled me back into my body. I couldn't breath. I have always at different times in my life thought about how profound that experience was and it has become a part of who I am forever.
