Brenda is a uniquely versatile virtuoso oboist with a diverse performing and teaching career, skills as an improvising musician and a commitment to oboe and music education that includes a wholistic and wide view. She won a 2008 Global Connections grant from Meet the Composer to go to Tanzania to "create via improvisation, a new piece of music that would bond the people who have the trees from which woodwinds are made, with the people who play those instruments". She also visited several Blackwood Conservation Organizations and sawmills, and is the first musician ever to see the entire process from finding and harvesting a blackwood tree, to the making of a top of the line oboe.
