Breaking the News is a documentary feature, broadband video series and ongoing blog on the evolution of modern journalism.

Through all three mediums, Breaking the News will explore and investigate the current state of the news industry, how it got that way and where its headed. For many, this story begins with the dramatic dismantling of the fourth estates most revered institution: the print newspaper. With old fiscal models now untenable, the local rag is quickly disappearing from the American doorstop.

As we follow the evolution, well hear from the vanguards of journalistic tradition living through this turbulent time. Well explore storytelling and reporting methods never before possible, pioneered by a new breed of news hounds. And we will expose the innovators who are not only surviving, but thriving, by invoking incredible changes in newsgathering, production, distribution and consumption. As these journalists, editors and publishers try to piece together this complex puzzle, well highlight the debates and decisions shaping the future of the news business.

The Breaking the New News blog, will aim to tell this story of journalism in transition; from print to pixel and broadcast to broadband. Our story will be told from multiple points of view from both the guardians of journalistic tradition and pioneers from the cutting edge all of whom are writing the next page of journalisms history.

We dont yet know where this story will lead. Will there be discoveries of new pioneers and private heroism, unexpected and largely unknown, that will surface during our investigation? Will what we once considered journalism even be recognizable in the sea of fact-check-free RSS feeds and aggressively distributed disinformation?

Perhaps. But perhaps not.

But one thing is clear, this issue affects all of us, from avid newspaper readers to those who have never even picked one up. And hopefully, together, we can figure out some answers.
