About Brandan - early medieval poetry goes worldmusic

In 2007 we had the luck to get to know Janni Beston from Kurdistan, who happened to study film & animation in Leipzig. He kind of fell in love with a love-song from our current EP "Ich zoch mir einen Valken", and - vóila - came up with the idea of a videoclip. And here it comes!

Brandan Band History:

Late in the summer of 2005, six musicians from Leipzig, Germany, got together under the name of BRANDAN to set sail and explore new waters.
During the year before, two members of the band had been doing research on early medieval poetry in Dublin and Madrid.
The ancient texts they found formed the basis of the the band's first EP "Ich Zoch Mir Einen Valken", which was released already after half a year of intensive rehearsing. Since then, the band has been playing at renowned festivals and locations all over Germany, e.g. at the "Klosterspektakel" in Greifswald, at the "Moritzbastei" in Leipzig and the "Objekt5" in Halle. In January 2007 the band qualified for the regional finals of the so-called "German Worldmusic Grammy" Creole. In the summer of the same year Brandan played at the international Grimmich Folkfestival in Gruenberg. With airplays at the renowned public radiostations "Deutschlandradio Kultur" and "Bayern 4 Klassik" Brandan found an even amplier audience.

Die Lyrik des frühen europäischen Mittelalters ist die Schatztruhe, aus der sich Brandan bedient: Althochdeutsche Zaubersprüche, altenglische Rätsel, galizische Liebeslieder liefern die Inspiration für eine Musik, die „modern und doch zeitlos anspruchsvoll wirkt und sich vollkommen abseits ausgetretener Mittelalterpfade bewegt", wie eine Rezensentin einmal bemerkte.

Die Band verwebt dabei gekonnt Folk und Pop mit Einflüssen aus Jazz und Klassik: Da klingt ein lateinischer Hymnus in einer Saxophonimprovisation aus. Der Germanengott Wotan trabt zu den Klängen einer Bluegrass-Fiddle durch die nordischen Wälder. Und das berühmte Falkenlied des Minnedichters Der Kürenberger wandelt sich zur traurig-schönen Popballade.
Mit diesem Konzept gelang es Brandan, sich für das Mitteldeutschlandfinale von Creole, dem „deutschen Grammy für Weltmusik zu qualifizieren. Beiträge auf Deutschlandradio Kultur und Bayern 4 Klassik machten die Band einem breiteren Hörerkreis bekannt.
„Mehr als nur ein Geheimtipp!, schrieb der Giessener Anzeiger nach dem Auftritt von Brandan beim internationalen Grimmich-Folkfestival. Doch noch ist die Band aus Leipzig eigentlich genau das: Ein echter Geheimtipp für Liebhaber anspruchsvoller Weltmusik.
