Islander i am not disputing hokins lineage
all i am saying that comparing him to the fighters from the old days is not fair to the older generation fighters because there was only 1 belt to fight for where hopkins had an option to fight for 4
I commend hopkins for being the only man to be able to hold all 4 belts(taylor does not count, hopkins was robed and i will stick to this to the day i die )

Correction Narvaez holds the WBO 112lb belt

dieallday - that is the difference between you and I. I search for objective means to make comparisons like the "original 8 weight classes" and title defenses. You like to take the most subjective route possible. Let me give you an example why (objectivity) this kind of works. Omar Narvaez holds the WBO 122 belt and has belted out 15 successful title defenses, he owns the weakest organizations title and has not attempted to unify so I look the other way. Now take Khaosai Galaxy who had 19 susccessful defenses of the WBA 115, he tried to unify w/IBF Pical and they stripped Pical before the fight. The WBA is the original sanctioning body so he is legit in my mind. Comparing Trinidad's 15 defenses to Armstrong's 19 at 147 is a stretch b/c Trinidad had the 2nd weakest of the belts (IBF) and unified in his last defense. Hopkins is this generation's Hagler there is no disputing who was 160 king when either had the throne.

Avalino- what everybody fails to realize is that the BUMS from Robinson's time would have no problem landing title shots today and a good many (NOT A MAJORITY) would get hold of a belt in today's diluted sport. Believe me the Tommy Bell's, Gene Fullmer's, Carmen Basilio's, Bobo Olsen's, Randy Turpin's and Jake LaMotta's of the world would have absolutely cleaned up in today's game.

Let me put it to you another way: Look for a soft touch on Mayweather's record like Henry Brusseles, that dude wouldn't be competitive with the bums Robinson fought every week on his European tour.

BTW those guys worked REAL jobs when they weren't training and fighting.

Oh how I love this page, its actually set as my home page. Beat that!!! ok it the first place I go to after checking the wire..
Hitman I feel you on that comment about how we look at this generation as inferior to past... and about the robinsons record; his skills impress me but I piss on records ESPECIALLY old timers. When boxing was A JOB!!! Robinson was world famous though, and he would tour as if he were a one man band. Fight 3 or 4 locals in france, (brazil, england, germany etc) fighting almost every other weekend, Robinsons record was NOT packed with 20 boxers quality of hopkins, another 20 haglers, and 25 monzons to boot... sorry to tell ya but there just isnt that many quality fighters in the world, especially at any particular time. If hopkins would have gone on tour after 95 touring the world cause people just want to see him not care who he fight, as they did robinson, his record would b 160-5-3.

Oh, how I love boxing. And thank God for Islander's page. Where else do people argue about this stuff, I love it! But i just had a strange thought. Boxing is the only sport where this generation athelets are considered inferior to the ones that came before it. I don't think that there's anyone who believes the 66Packers could beat last year's Steelers or that the Bill Russel Celtics could beat last year's Lakers, but we're all pretty sure that Robinsin could take Mayweather, Mosley, and Pacquaio, probably with about three months!

And Ring Warrior-Before he retired the first time Robinsin was 132-3. Yeah. He only lost thr times, once to LaMotta, who was thirteen pounds heavier at the time, and he avenged it three weeks later, once to the Irish guy I can't remember, and he knocked out him cold with one hook in the rematch, and when collasped after thriteen rounds against light heavyweight champion Joey Maxim in Yankee Staudim. No one topping that.

I'm not trying to replace Ray Robinson, I just wanna compare him to the boxers that I know today so I can at least have an idea on how good he really was. If he was more dominant than Hopkins at 160 and Leonard at 147 lbs, then he must really good
dieallday (17 hours ago)
Islander i think you rate fighter by their overall body of work(i should consider title defenses more but the problem is that there are too many fucking belts around so you cant compare joe Louis 25 to hopkins 20
because hopkins did not get the lineal title until his 13 title defense, back in the day tittle defenses was great way to see how dominant a fighter was)

i kind of lean more in terms of talent potential.

Avalino79- Do you know what has gotten this all started? One guess,

Yep you got it, where does the winner of the Pacquiao-Mayweather fight rank all time? Top 10, top 15, top 20, top 25? Where?

Answer- for Mayweather none of the above. For Pacquiao maybe the top 30 or so, maybe.
