Innovative choreography, dramatic and playful scenes, and cutting-edge ballet technique converge in this dynamic performance. Beautiful and theatrical works are set to music ranging from Mozart to The Doors.
This year's concert features pieces by Boulder Ballet's Artistic Directors Ana Claire and Peter Davison, along with a world premiere by guest choreographer Valerie Madonia, former Principal Dancer with American Ballet Theater and the Joffrey Ballet.

This one-hour program, directed by Boulder Ballet Artistic Director Ana Claire, illustrates the history of ballet from its beginnings in the peasant dances of the Renaissance to contemporary ballet. Included are demonstrations of the artful athleticism of ballet, a humorous classical mime scene, musical theater dance, and audience participation. Steps in Time is performed by four Boulder Ballet professional company members. The troupe travels with its own Marley dance floor and professional sound system allowing them to present the highest quality performance, complete with pointe work and full costuming. Venues include gymnasiums and school auditoriums.

Boyz Dance was created nine years ago by international performing artist Peter Davison, a current Artistic Director of Boulder Ballet. Says Peter, "I noticed that here in the U.S. there is a stigma about males being expressive. Many of our role models on TV and in movies are super stoic and guarded, poker-face types. I know from my own career how rewarding the movement arts can be, because they mix athleticism rivaling any sport with the opportunity to explore emotions, humor, and imagination. Dancers can develop awesome physical prowess, teamwork, camaraderie, and many other benefits of sports teams, with the addition of artistry. So I started Boyz Dance to provide this type of opportunity in Boulder."
Boyz Dance is a multi-disciplinary class based on the kinds of movement artistry performed by Peter as a member of the trio Airjazz, and as a solo touring artist. His mix of dance, juggling and physical theater was described by Dance Magazine as "brilliant...blissful artistry." Boyz Dance evolves from this mix of movement arts to engage boys aged 7 to 18.
