By the time I was four years old I was always singing, learning songs from listening to the radio. My only formal musical training came in the form of piano lessons which lasted about two years until my hands could no longer endure the beating with a ruler from my teacher. Before graduating from the 6th grade we were given a hearing test to see if we could participate in the school band the following year and was told I was tone deaf and could not join the band. I was obsessed with listening to the stacks of old 78s my grandmother had and soon began collecting them on my own. Around 1970 I started playing five string banjo and soon after, ukulele and guitar which has become my main instrument. In these early days, we could hang around all day, party and listen to old hillbilly and blues 78s and learn to play an instrument without the aid of books or videos "hell this was the day of 8 track tapes" so we just learned to play by ear.

In the early 70s I took off for two years, hitch-hiking around the country and playing the banjo for tips. My wanderings
started at my home in Pennsylvania through the south to Key West where I spent several months before traveling west to Los Angeles were I spent several more months traveling each day by bus to the LA art museum competing for tips with its many performers.
From there I made two more cross country trips with my banjo, always seeking out other musicians, free meals and a place to stay.
