This is a kind of mini movie:

Doyle has a vision of what is to befall his friends if he dies but (as is the way) time unfolds to leave him unable to prevent it.

After Doyle sacrafices himself we see the insanity the visions caused in Angel when he tried to carry them in a world without Cordelia or Doyle to help him, the way he is pleading for help and the return of his lost friend. Doing the only thing she can to save Angel, Cordelia takes the visions into herself once more but since she is mortal and not strong enough to endure them they destroy her body and mind over time.

When a demon approaches her in the episode "Birthday" and tells her that she will die if she has another vision I have her making a different choice...

And this is how Doyle returns to set things right.
