Bob McNeill emigrated from Glasgow, Scotland to New Zealand in 1998. He has become one of the country's foremost folk songwriters and performers, and his songs have been covered by top folk artists in New Zealand, Scotland and Ireland. He has twice won the Recording Industry Association of New Zealand "Tui" award for Best Folk Album, most recently in January 2005 for his acclaimed 2004 album about emigration and identity, Turn the Diesels.A writer heavily influenced by the American New Folk artists Richard Shindell, Dave Carter, John Gorka and their contemporaries, his songs explore characters in trouble, in grief and in self-exploration, and retain the Celtic influences he grew up with. The Dominion Post compared him to Jackson Browne, James Taylor, Luka Bloom and Dougie McLean.
McNeill currently is working on a new solo project, Shine, due out in December 2006 as an EP, and on The Other Room, an album of modern Scottish fiddle music with Ben the Hoose, the duo he formed with Orkney fiddler Kenny Ritch, who also lives in New Zealand.
