Bought the 12'' of this at the time on the strength of hearing the single version on the radio. Load of b*llocks. The tune (ie all the verses and choruses) had been removed in favour of an early drum & bass experiment. Horrible. Didn't even have the decency to have the 7'' version on the flipside...

Still got this on a much treasured VHS recorded straight from telly on the night. Loved the Tube and Billy Bragg too.

He doesn't need to speak out about this or any other issue. He's ok financially (I presume) and could just withdraw to his Dorset home for a quiet life. He speaks out because he does actually care about the people of this country and how it's ran. We need more people in the public eye like him.

I was 15-16 around this time, Billy Bragg and The Pogues made the only UK music worth listening to in the mid 80's.

Great song. I've got the Beauty & Sadness ep from around 1988 somewhere. Heard it first as a live version on a bside of a single off the 1st lp (can't remember which track I'm afraid).

This is truly a great song - one of the maestros very best. The vast majority of the Style Councils stuff was shocking though. We needed a lot more from him in those depressing times than a soul/jazz/funk vanity project.
