Similar to its descendant Japanese sumi painting, traditional Chinese brush painting is an exercise of the mind. It requires peace, calm, focus, and serendipity. It was originally practiced by the Chinese literati scholars, as a way to meditate on paper.
I try to use the traditional practice, as closely as possible. You only get to do each stroke ONCE. You can't go back and touch things up, so each painting is unique.

Thank you for providing a great foundation for the Chinese brush painting beginner in explaining The Four Gentlemen and other essentials. I would really like to see how a sumi-e painting is composed, how you find the essence of a subject, particularly landscapes, and how to do "more with less. Thanks again.
