Jazz is Lee Morgan and Wayne Shorter

Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers. Lee Morgan, trumpet; Wayne Shorter, tenor saxophone, Bobby Timmons. piano, composer, Jimmy Merritt, bass, Art ...

    blue47er blue47er commented:

Even in the high register Lee's notes never sound forced or harsh, they have a surprisingly soft edge. A truly masterful trumpeter with absolute control and command of his instrument. His early demise was not simply a loss to jazz but a loss to music.

    Fleurette Africaine - Duke Ellington

From the album, "Money Jungle", Capitol

    blue47er blue47er commented:

Where is the statue of Duke Ellington in Washington DC? The nation owes Mr Ellington an enduring debt of gratitude but now, it seems, great musicians have been replaced with overblown rock gods.

Reflections in D - Duke Ellington

From the album, "Piano Reflections", Capitol

    blue47er blue47er commented:

Richly satisfying in every sense. Duke was far more than a composer or bandleader, his pianism was priceless as evidenced all the way through this gorgeous rendition. Thank you for posting it.

    Dick Morrissey-Starts Fell On Alabama

A really good jazz song from Dick Morrissey.

    blue47er blue47er commented:

Dick's playing brightened my young life back in the early 1960s. A lovely young guy who had music coming out of every pore in his body. Went far too soon but left a marvellous legacy. Thanks for this one.

Two albums emerged from this extended gig at Mitchell's Studio club in LA 1966. The quality of the music is never less than excellent and this track is clear evidence of how empathetic were Hamp, Red and Donald. There's a whole bunch more track from this session lying unissued in the vaults (now ...

How nice to hear this track. My thanks for posting it. I first heard Harold McNair when, billed as, 'Little G', he played Ronnie Scott's club in 1960. A marvellously gifted and passionate player who always delivered of his best.

Jimmie Rowles & Stan Getz : The Peacocks

Jimmie Rowles' composition, "The Peacocks", must be just about my favorite ballad in all of jazz. I never tire of it. It pulls on something in me. ...

    blue47er blue47er commented:

Rowles was just beautiful: an encyclopaedic knowledge of the great American songbook. One of the finest accompanists and solo pianists of his era who shared the stage with some of the greatest names in jazz. I miss him.

Thelonious Monk- Studio Session- Ugly Beauty

    blue47er blue47er commented:

Teo Macero produced some fine sessions but I can't help feeling decidedly queasy at his brown-nosing of Monk followed by the gross mistake in not recording the trio and then interrupting them so very rudely. Monk was inflamed and was perfectly entitled to be so. In view of Columbia's miserly fina...

THE LEGEND OF TEDDY EDWARDS (2001)

Excerpt Im So Afraid of Love

    blue47er blue47er commented:

One of nature's (and jazz's) great gentlemen. Loved his playing and when, once in conversation with him, loved his reminiscences. He had an astonishing memory for detail of jazz history and characters, and was also a lovely human being in addition to his being a giant of tenor saxophone playing.
