Just Plain Ant - All Becomes Dust

Back in 2008 I first came upon the music of an artist who, a year later would play a large role in blocSonic's transition to a full-fledged netlabel with it's own original releases along side it's netBloc series. That artist, Just Plain Ant made his first appearance on "netBloc Vol. 17: Refined Excursions For The Discriminating Listener" with his incredible "Revolution (Featuring Precise)" and it's throw-back classic hip-hop vibe.

That introduction to the music of the Richmond, VA talent was just the beginning of a sonic journey for him and for us as listeners. His first blocSonic album, "Dig Deep", was released in February the following year and it showed us that Ant was an ARTIST. His growth as a musician was evident.

Over the years he's returned with albums that expect you to LISTEN, that expect you to grow as a listener along with him as an artist. You do grow... and his music seeps into your soul. When you put away those albums for a while and at a later time return to them, you realize just how much they became a part of you. That's classic.

With his new album "All Becomes Dust", he again challenges the listener with his further explorations in downtempo. At times the album teeters on the edge of chaos yet all the while retaining its firm grasp of the funk and pushes music forward.

So now it's that time again... follow Ant... as he leads you on his latest sonic voyage.

C-Doc - Divided We Stand

...and finally it's here! The new album by Public Enemy producer/EMCEE/filmmaker, David 'C-Doc' Snyder, is finally available for you to download and enjoy. There's absolutely no doubt in my mind that you'll enjoy it. That's no malarky, let me tell you...

Considering the incredible work that C-Doc has been turning out for Public Enemy, The Impossebulls and his & Tirade's LOWdown, I was quite eager to hear what he had cooked up for his solo release! When I first heard it about a week ago, I was floored. Even better than I expected, and my expectations were fairly high! "Divided We Stand" is twelve tracks of no holds barred, high-quality music for hip-hop connoisseurs.

Although this is a "C-Doc" album... it's no mistake that the album cover states "Featuring The Impossebulls" prominently. For those of you in the know, you will notice a couple of the Bulls members featured prominently on the album and singles. For those of you not in the know, no worries... along with C-Doc... DJ Def Chad, Marcus J Gilligan & Tirade are all members of The Impossebulls... a virtual rapp squad that was originally put together by none other than the great Chuck D via PublicEnemy.com's EnemyBoard back in the late 90s. The Impossebulls went on to release their debut album "Slave Education" via Chuck's label SlamJamz in 2004. What the future holds for The Impossebulls, only the squad can say, but for now, this album should tide you over. Never have these Bulls sounded SO good!

Personal favorites are "Braggadocio", "Drumm Machine (Featuring DJ Def Chad)", "Far Gone (Featuring DJ Def Chad)", "(Story) Telling (Featuring Marcus J Gilligan)" & "Broken Homes (Featuring DJ Def Chad)". Though there are so many strong tracks that Doc and I cooked up a scheme in which we release extra singles, in addition to the standard two (so, over the next couple weeks, keep an eye out at blocSonic.com for a surprise or two). Anyway, chances are you'll have your own favorites, so don't let my love of those steer you from listening to everything.

The Honorable Sleaze - Broad Street Boogie

It's been a year since blocSonic has last been blessed by new music by the one and only The Honorable Sleaze. As you'll hear, over the past year, he's continued to perfect his art on both the production and lyrical fronts. Over the past few years, Sleaze has done a good job of developing a unique rhyme style and sound. If the mainstream hip-hop world was about QUALITY as opposed to... shoot... I don't even know what it's 'about' today... never-the-less... if it were about quality, Sleaze could find himself a place in the mainstream. However, this isn't the case, with the exception of a few, REAL hip-hop's place is now under the underground. There are too many only interested in replicating formulas, this has been the case for nearly 20 years. Mainstream hip-hop is now represented by biters biting biters biting biters. No room for unique voices such as Sleaze and the host of talented EMCEES holding it down for Richmond, Virginia aka RVA on this release. Consider yourself one of the lucky ones, to be clued into great music that many others are too oblivious to care about. Thank you for checking out REAL hip-hop.

Flex Vector - Spellbound

When you think of Maine, you think of forests... you think of lakes... you think of beaches... you think of the Atlantic... you think of lobstah... you think of "vacationland". You probably don't think of its music scene. Our musical exports to the rest of the country and the world are few and far between. Perhaps because of that... or in spite of it... the scene is quite diverse... country, folk, hip-hop, jazz, punk, rock, metal... you name it... someone's creating it.

Vpopolam - Gryaznyj albom

Are you ready to rock? I hope you are because today I'm excited to release the powerful debut EP, "Gryaznyj albom"/"The Dirty Album", by the Russian band Vpopolam. They call their sound "anti-glamorous chanson-core", a blend of funk, rock & grooves. At times the sound is reminiscent of Red Hot Chili Peppers and at other times, the sound's hard to pin down. There's one thing about it that's very easy to pin down... these guys know how to make absolutely infectious music. I forewarn you, get ready to add "Gryaznyj albom" to heavy rotation!

With this release, I'm fulfilling one of the goals that I set for blocSonic when I first committed to releasing original music. I never envisioned blocSonic as only a "hip-hop" label or even a strictly English language label; I've long wanted to release music of many genres regardless of where the artists hale from and what language they perform in. I feel that the American mainstream goes out of its way to restrict the majority of it's music to English language acts which helps mold American mainstream music listeners into a rather narrow-minded audience. While listeners in the rest of the world somehow manage to enjoy music with lyrics they don't understand, Americans continue to live in their bubble, only listening to Jay-Z, Rihanna, Coldplay and whatever other English act is being spoon-fed to them. At least that's the way it's long been and how it would continue if the mainstream music industry had its way. Though, the internet exists and some of us are adventurous listeners and we explore. Good music is good music, regardless of where it was created. If you're visiting blocSonic to listen to new music, then I know you are an adventurous listener. Go ahead, download now. LOWdown - dumpTRUCK XE

Back in '99-2000, I began frequenting Public Enemy's Enemyboard, a forum that PE fans have long frequented to shoot the breeze about anything under the sun... whether it be the latest Public Enemy release, the current political climate or merely to flame each other about how wack their musical tastes are (I kid). It's a diverse group of people with strong opinions and one in which its members have formed strong bonds. It was on that same forum that I connected with Chuck D and subsequently began designing for his label SLAMjamz and Public Enemy. Also on that forum is where a group of guys came to know each other and eventually form the world's first virtual rap squad... The Impossebulls. Among the group's members are long time friends Tirade and Public Enemy producer/Film Maker C-Doc (The Warhammer), who make up the core of LOWdown. Also in that group you'll find DJ President Ike, whose turntable wizardry you'll find laced throughout dumpTRUCK and Marcus J Gilligan, who makes a resonating appearance on "Ten Years Coming (Ninety-Four Drums of Death)".

Over the years, as I've built blocSonic, the two worlds haven't crossed much. I haven't promoted blocSonic all that much over at the Enemyboard and the Enemyboard hasn't entered into the equation at blocSonic. I was lucky enough to get Chuck D to make an appearance on Just Plain Ant's album "Rumble, Young Man, Rumble" and ILLUS (also an Enemyboard alumnus) has been featured on a couple netBlocs, though that's been it... until 2011 when C-Doc expressed interest in releasing music here! He first made an appearance on Garmisch' "The EPs XE", with his "No Shine Remixx" of their track "Glimmer". Now that connection grows with this XE re-release of LOWdown's "dumpTRUCK EP".

LOWdown is unapologetically early 90s boom bap Hip-Hop, through and through. LOWdown is THUMPIN' beats, it's EMCEEING, it's humor, it's big THUMPIN' beats... oh wait, did I already say that? This Xtended Edition contains the complete original EP along with a host of bonus gems from the LOWdown archives!

MUTE - UNkilling Time

It's hard to believe that January is almost done and it's already that time for us to wrap up MUTE month. It seems like it went way too quickly! No worries though, we end it with a tremendous new EP produced by UNknown (Formula). At times dark and other times introspective, yet all the while "UNkilling Time" is absorbing.
