Established in 1972, BJM DANSE was born from the inspiration of a grande dame of the cultural scene (member of the Order of Canada since 1987, the Founder Emeritus of Les Ballets Jazz de Montréal): Geneviève Salbaing with the support of her cofounders Eva Von Gencsy and Eddie Toussaint. After the departure her two cofounders, Madame Geneviève Salbaing assumed the task of the artistic direction of Les Ballets Jazz on her own, experiencing both the successes of the company and the challenges of a constantly changing social and cultural context. Under her direction Les Ballet Jazz was renewed, transformed and evolved with a remarkable vitality and constant openness to the world at large. The naming of Louis Robitaille as Artistic Director of BJM DANSE in 1998 crystallized the ambitions of a company which boldly entered the new millennium. Having developed a strong identity, BJM DANSE is now known and appreciated around the world, and continues to engage in an unbroken dialogue with our era, passionately promoting the interaction of the creators with their public.
