U-Ram Choe
U-Ram Choe
b. 1970, Lives and works in Seoul, Korea
The visual language of U-Ram Choe describes natural biomorphic form that is marked by a seemingly organic incorporation of etched stainless steel, robotics and acrylic. Exploring the boundaries of archeological discovery and developmental morphology, Choe's explanations and Latin titles for these creations follow the linguistic traditions of scientific nomenclature. Telling stories using gestural transformation and the tracing of imagined evolutionary stages, these pieces take on the silhouette of actual life forms, as intricate automata express a refined delicacy and weightlessness. Unexpected and fantastical, Choe's kinetic simulations cyclically breathe with movement that recalls aquatic propulsion, flight and ritualistic courtship displays.
Upcoming exhibits in the United States include the Frist Center of Visual Center in Nashville and the Asia Society in 2010. Featured in the 2008 Liverpool Biennale at FACT, Foundation for Art and Creative Technology, Liverpool, Choe has also exhibited at the Mori Art Museum, Tokyo; Shanghai Biennial; Leeum Samsung Museum of Art, Seoul; NTT Intercommunication Center (ICC), Tokyo; Art Basel; Seoul Museum of Art; Trammell & Margaret Crow Collection of Asian Art, Dallas; Asian Art Triennial, Manchester Art Gallery; Sungkok Art Museum, Seoul; Metropolitan Art Museum, Busan; Galleria d'Arte Moderna, Bologna; SCAI The Bathhouse, Tokyo; Beijing Expocenter; and Olympic Art Museum, Seoul.
Daniel Canogar
Daniel Canogar (b. 1964, Spain) uses discarded electronic materials in his photography, video, sculpture and installations, which construct portraits of a society and an age. Finding inspiration in the archeology of new media, Canogar brings the dead back to life, revealing their contained secrets.
In 2012, Canogar has upcoming solo exhibitions at Perili Kösk Museum in Istanbul, at Second Street Gallery in Charlottesville, VA, and at Fundación Telefónica in Buenos Aires.
Björn Schülke
b. 1967, Germany
Björn Schülke pursues a creative style that is equally influenced by modern abstraction and instruments of scientific measurement. The slow deliberate movements in his sculptures spatially consider mass and weight of form. Also influenced by the Dadaist tradition and Jean Tinguely, the theme of an absurd machine is key in Schülke's work. Playfully transforming live spatial energy into active responses, his objects experiment with solar panels, infrared surveillance, and propelled wind power. Many of his larger kinetic sculptures combine elements of surveillance technologies, robotics, interactive video and sound. Schülke's active sculptures question the way in which we interact with modern technology: on entering the installation site, the audience becomes part of the 'system' as the works (some freestanding, others suspended) monitor or react to the human element.
Recently awarded a commission for permanent sculpture in 2010 at the San Jose international airport, Schülke's work is also collected by Sharjah Art Museum; Sculpture Museum Glaskasten, Marl; Jülich Research Centre; Neiman Marcus; and the Progressive Art Collection. Exhibitions of Schülke's work include the Biennale of Electronic Arts Perth (BEAP); Verbeke Foundation, Stekene; KulturBahnhof, Kassel; Daelim Contemporary Art Museum, Seoul; Hunterdon Museum of Art; Peterborough Museum; Circulo de Bellas Artes, Madrid; Museu Paulista, São Paulo; Fuhrwerkswaage Kunstraum, Cologne; Neue Gesellschaft für Bildende Kunst (NGBK), Berlin; Art Center Z33, Hasselt; Stadtmuseum & Kunstsammlung Jena; Kunsthalle Erfurt; Sergey Kuryokhin International Festival, St. Petersburg; Biennale Arte Emergente, Torino; Maison Eclusière 5, Toulouse; Jeune Création, Paris; Rauma Biennale Balticum; and the European Media Art Festival (EMAF), Osnabrück.
Daniel Rozin
Daniel Rozin (b. 1961, Israel) creates interactive installations and sculptures that have the unique ability to change and respond to the presence of a viewer. In most of his pieces the viewer takes part, actively and creatively, in the performance of his art. Known for his longstanding investigation of image creation -- be it in response to woven fabric, stone mosaics or today's pixel -- Rozin studies the very nature of modern structure.
