Movie : Pather Panchali 1955 (পথের পাঁচালী) (Song of the Little Road) Directed by : Satyajit Ray Screenplay by : Satyajit Ray Based on Pather Panchali by : Bibhutibhushan Bandopadhyay Cast : Kanu Banerjee - Harihar Ray, Apu and Durga's father Karuna Banerjee - Sarbajaya Ray, Apu and Durga's mother Subir Banerjee - Apu Ray Runki Banerjee (Uma Dasgupta, teen) - Durga Ray (Child) Chunibala Devi - Indir Thakrun, Old aunt Haren Banerjee - Candy seller Music by : Ravi Shankar Cinematography : Subrata Mitra Editing by : Dulal Dutta Studio : Government of West Bengal Distributed by : Edward Harrison (1958) Merchant Ivory Productions Sony Pictures Classics (1995) Release date(s) : August 26, 1955 (India) September 22, 1958 (US) Country : India Language : Bengali Budget : 150,000 (US$3000)
Script : The film never had a complete script; it was made from Ray's drawings and notes. Ray tried to extract and build a simple theme out of the apparently random sequences of significant as well as trivial episodes of the novel, while preserving the loitering quality of it. Ray himself commented that, "The script had to retain some of the rambling quality of the novel because that in itself contained a clue to the feel of authenticity: life in a poor Bengali village does ramble." Some notable shifts from the novel in the script include the death scene of Indir Thakrun, which occurs quite early in the novel in a village shrine at the presence of some adult members of the family; in the film she dies in the open in the presence of Apu and Durga. The scene of Apu and Durga running to catch a glimpse of the train is not there in the novel, neither child manages to see the train there, although they made an attempt. Finally, the ending of the film - the departure of the family from the village - is not the end of the novel.
Awards : Pather Panchali won multiple national and international awards 1955 - National Film Award for Best Film (Golden Lotus Award) National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Bengali (Silver Lotus Award) I India 1956 - Best Human Document I OCIC Award - Special Mention I 9th Cannes Film Festival I France Palme d'Or I 1956 - Vatican Award, Rome I Italy 1956 - Golden Carbao, Manila I Philippines 1956 - Diploma of Merit - Edinburgh International Film Festival I Scotland 1957- -Selznick Golden Laurel for Best Film - Berlin International Film Festival I Germany 1957 - Golden Gate for Best Director I Golden Gate for Best Picture - San Francisco International Film Festival I U. Tim and Eric, the benevolent masterminds behind Tim and Eric Awesome Show, Great Job!, have teamed with THQ to bring to life Professor Genki's Super Ethical Reality Climax, Saints Row: The Third's most deranged and demented game show.
Tim and Eric will take the depravity of Professor Genki's Super Ethical Reality Climax to new heights, and lows, with their own, full-length live-action episode, featuring such crowd-pleasing contests as Tall Cat Parade and Eat Yourself. They will also, for the first time ever, detail the intriguing and inspiring life story of the mysterious man-cat, Professor Genki. Beware: this episode is for mature audiences only, and anyone faint of heart, or with a history of heart problems, cat allergies, or high moral standards should probably do anything else when this mind-bending episode breaks the Internet next week.
