Initially thought to be a new species of larger than normal chimpanzees, a chimpanzee-gorilla hybrid or the extinct Gorilla gorilla uellensis, the Bili apes have been since shown to be part of the central chimpanzee subspecies. Nevertheless, the Bili chimpanzees do habitually make ground nests unlike all other known chimpanzee populations, and their reputation as "lion-killers" have been partially substantiated.
