Big Guns Upstairs was formed when classmates Tom "Alice" Winegard and Mike "Durk" Durkin were in a music technology class as freshman at Nonnewaug High School. For a project, the class had to split up into groups and write and record an original song. Durk and Alice teamed up with Brandon Zanavich and together wrote "Pimp Daddy Dog". They recorded the vocals on the school's GarageBand software and were immediately hooked on writing and recording songs. Soon the trio decided to make a band, called Tom and the Motherfunkers. However, all three of them played guitar, and they needed a drummer. After they changed their name to Ithaka, the three started looking around the school for a drummer that had enough talent to perform with them. When none could be found, Brandon decided to leave the band, making Ithaka a two-person band. Alice then realized that if he played bass, then they only needed a drummer. He started to teach himself bass, and he and Durk found Joe DePaola. Joe said he hadn't played drums in a while, but was still good. They decided to bring him into the band. However, due to transportation issues, Durk and Alice decided to let him go. However, their friend Kevin O'Connor was starting to take drum lessons and wanted to be in the band with them. Finally, the newly named Big Guns Upstairs had a solid lineup. Alice started writing songs, and they got together regularly to jam. On August 4, 2009, the trio decided to do a cover of "The Pretender" by Foo Fighters. They needed a second guitarist, and Devin "Babyface" Good played guitar. Originally, Devin was only supposed to play guitar on that one track, but Big Guns Upstairs wanted to let him in as their official second guitarist. Alice has recently tried to write songs for a brand new genre that they call "meggae" for a metal-reggae mix. So far, he says, it's pretty freakin hard. The band hopes to release their debut album, Faster Orange and the Random Pelvis, by May or June of 2010.
On March 18, 2010, bassist and backup vocalist Tom Winegard moved to Ohio, where he tried to start up a new Big Guns Upstairs. However, he couldn't find anybody to jam with, so he decided to start a solo project, called Suicide Kisses and Razorblade Hugs. BGUS has since been looking around Connecticut for a new bassist, but haven't filled the spot yet.
